Hannover/Langenhagen International Airport
Hannover Airport was opened in 1952 on an old airfield. In 1973 two modern terminals were opened. In 1998 the larger terminal C was opened to handle more passengers, adding 8 more gates. All three terminals are capable of taking a Boeing 747.
In 2000 an S-Bahn connection was established between the airport and Hameln (Hamelin) via Hannover Central Station. Trains leave every 30 minutes for a 17-minute journey. In 2005 it was decided to establish a second S-Bahn connection. The Airport is connected to the A2 and A7.
From 1957 to 1990 the airport hosted the “Internationale Luft- und Raumfahrtausstellung” (International Aerospace Exhibition ILA), Germany's largest airshow.
Since the end of the Cold War Hannover International has become Germany's major airport for services to countries of the former Eastern bloc next to Frankfurt International.
5200 people work for the Airport. Every year 8 mio. people board a plane .
In the terminals there are 20 shops (seven duty-free shops), 16 restaurants and 35 tour operators; also there are a shoppingcenter and 2 hotels.
Hannover International is one of the very few German airports which are open 24 hours a day, but in practice there are very few flights between 11pm and 4am.
